Those are the words that sum up our family’s experience with travelling. I’m sure that sometimes there isn’t pouring rain, gale-force winds, freezing rain or snow but it’s awfully hard to pin such a memory down. In any case, the freezing rain had just started when we – finally – got on the road on December. I was going to write “on the road to Wheatley” but since my plan to run out of food rather than have anything spoil in the fridge while we were away was just a little too effective, we had to pick lunch up on the way and so technically we were on the road to McDonald’s. Reid was so cute in her white Santa and reindeer shirt and denim skirt. After her hamburger, it was all the more festive a shirt. (What was that kid’s mother thinking?)Reid and I decided to leave Ken in peace and have a nap. I awoke to a heat wave. Since it’s my job to control the temperature and driving was clearly a challenge, I asked Ken if he wanted me to adjust the heat. He said, tersely, “it keeps the window from freezing.” I was so glad he does the driving. By Pickering, or wherever it is we exit to find the 407, it was dark, raining heavily and I was in the backseat with Reid. May I say again how much space her car seat takes up? Reid still loves the peel-and-stick foam shapes like she first played with at Hallowe’en and so we spent many minutes and several sheets of paper on this activity. Of course I had Christmas shapes – I’m not *that* cheap. After we got onto the 407, which was after a wrong turn that I suggested followed by us trying to find a suitable cross road, Reid and I watched “Frosty the Snowman” on Ken’s old laptop. I never thought I’d let her watch DVDs in the car but it turns out I can live with it :+) We drove through to Cambridge for supper at about 7:30, not that we were longing for Cambridge food but to avoid stopping in Toronto and the McDonald’s at the service centre in Guelph. With hindsight, we should have gone with a second McDonald’s meal of the day. We went into a Quiznos (my first time, I think). Or at least Reid and I went in. Ken thought his back would hurt even more if it had a chance to loosen up than if it stayed in its familiar, unhappy position. In the restaurant we were met with surly counter staff and friendly drunken patrons. People always think they’re far funnier when drunk than the sober people around them do. While Reid was oh so carefully carrying a bottle of iced tea for Ken to the cash register, she dropped it. Of course it broke. I was worried about keeping her dry and out of the broken glass. The staff didn’t even fake concern, asking only who had dropped it and saying I’d have to pay. I guess free refills are probably out, too. We ended up paying about $20 for our supper. They were gross. Maybe without the bad service I’d have thought they were less bad but as it is, I don’t see myself going back to Quiznos. After supper, Reid fell asleep quite quickly. When we got to Grandma Joyce’s, it was close to 10 or 10:30. Reid thought it was time to be awake but not me. We used the bathroom and went to bed. I suspect I fell asleep first but she was still in bed when I awoke so that’s all that matters.
