Aunt Pam, Brianna and George were visiting on Saturday. We stopped at the rummage sale at the church where Kindermusik is held before class and bought a bunch of Golden Books and later read:
- This is My Family by Gina and Mercer Mayer;
- Precious Moments: Let’s Be Thankful by Matt Mitter;
- The Velveteen Rabbit, adapted from the story by Margery Williams, as a Golden Book but with still too many words for Reid and Daddy (or maybe just for Reid);
- Big Bird’s Red Book witten by Rosanne and Jonathan Cerf, which Reid enjoyed even though she has never seen an episode of Sesame Street;
- The Day Snuffy Had the Sniffles by Linda Lee Maifair, I still haven’t come to terms with everyone seeing Snuffle-upagus;
- My First Counting Book by Lilian Moore and illustrated by Garth Williams. Williams also illustrated another book that we enjoy – I recognized the art work. It’s not often that I can identify an artist; and
- Winnie-the-Pooh and the Honey Patch (no author), a Walt Disney story and so the characters are not as objectionable as in the A.A. Milne ones where Rabbit is nasty and negative, Tigger is obnoxious and Pooh is incredibly self-centred and greedy for honey.
I also picked up:
- Winnie-the-Pooh All Year Long (no author), again a Walt Disney story. Ordinarily I would want to stick with the original author but these work for us right now; and
- I’m Taking a Trip on My Train by Shirley Neitzel, which has a good rhythm and rhyme and is a bit of a rebus and has a great ending, “I have a request (I don’t think it’s too hard): Before going to bed, pick up this freight yard, because during the night I’d like to refrain from taking an unplanned trip on your train.”
So as not to alienate the books we’ve owned for a long time, we read:
- At My House by Claire Clark and Susan James Frye, a Kindermusik book from last session;
- Click, Clack, Moo – Cows that Type by Doreen Cronin; and
- Alpha Bugs by David A Carter, because pop-ups are still cool.
