Daycare diaries

I may have told some of you this story (but hopefully not everyone – I asked Karin and she didn’t remember it). There’s a new girl in Reid’s class at a daycare. One night there was a note in Reid’s binder that Reid had befriended the new girl, holding her hand and helping her with shoes. Now, as someone who helps Reid with *her* shoes, I’m wondering what exactly Reid did to help the other girl but it’s nice to know she tries.

There’s a new boy in the class who pushes and takes toys from the other kids, from what Ken sees. I tell him that toddlers have limited ways of expressing their stress at change and he already knows that but he also doesn’t like someone being mean to *his* daughter. Here’s hoping that Reid doesn’t get fed up and push him back – the retaliator always gets the penalty, eh, and I’d rather Ken not have to sign an incident report where Reid is in the wrong. There’ve been enough already with kids and bugs biting her.

Last night when I picked Reid up, she was playing in the preschool area (which I’ve mentioned she likes) because as the kids leave, the teachers are able to bring the remaining kids together. Ken is earlier than me to pick Reid up (which is why he is the principal chauffeur) but she is getting to mingle with new kids and teachers and so I rationalize that being a bit late occasionally is okay. On our way out, we were let into the pre-school building for Reid to have a potty break. New bathrooms are very popular with Reid (in fact any bathroom away from home is popular) and since this one had tiny toilets and a sink you could reach, Reid was pleased with the trip. I’m hoping Reid’s time in the pre-schooler’s yard and building will help when she moves to her next class in February or so. When she left the infant room, she only had to go across the hall but the next class is in a whole new building.
