Books we read, January 7th

Yesterday was a day for picture books but today, board books were the rule. We started with The Birthday Monsters by Sandra Boynton (a present from Dylan, Roy and Melissa on Reid’s 1st birthday) and also the November 2000 – The Cats Issue – of Chirp (a hand-me-down from Danielle which Reid enjoys because Ken and I both have our own magazines). I have to read the text, obviously, but she is able to do most of the puzzles and certainly understands the stories and information.

It was the last hurrah for a few Christmas books that are going to be packed up til next year:

  • The Donkey’s Christmas Song by Nancy Tafuri is really beautiful. The pictures are nicely drawn and the little donkey who is shy about is loud bray is welcomed and loved;
  • Santa’s Suit: touch and feel Christmas fun by Kate Lee and illustrated by Edward Eaves. If you have ever wondered what Santa would look like in a yellow suit (think lemon) or one with purple sparkles (wow!), you will learn; and
  • Mrs. Wishy-Washy’s Christmas by Joy Cowley with illustration by Elizabeth Fuller who together bring smiles to both Reid and me with “They (a cow, pig and duck together) jumped right in with splashes and sploshes and rose pink soap for their Christmas washes.”
  • Santa’s Noisy Night by Julie Sykes, which parallels what happens when *I* am suppposed to be quiet.

We also read:

  • Baby Einstein Neighbourhood Animals by Marilyn Singer, a book that travelled far and wide in Reid’s diaper bag when she was small;
  • Little Bear Paints on the Farm – once by Ken and once by me;
  • Yakety-Yak! no author given but illustrated by David Crossley, which has tabs that pull down to reveal teeth and a tongue (popular with Reid);
  • Winnie the Pooh Seasons: An “I Can Spot” Book (no author). When we ask if she can find an item, Reid points first to the left column where the items are listed by picture and then finds the other one in the scene. She doubles the search value;
  • Alpha Bugs: A Pop-up Alphabet by David A. Carter. It’s a pop-up, what more do I need to say?;
  • Who am I? in the jungle (no author), which Reid likes for the guessing and for the googly eyes that each animal has;
  • Les saisons et leurs couleurs (no author), which has coloured transparent plastic that tips out, allowing Reid to change the colour of some parts of the illustrations or she peeks through the plastic at other things. Surprisingly Clio doesn’t enjoy looking through the plastic even when Reid considerately holds it up to her face;
  • World’s Greatest Mom (no author), and, no, I didn’t buy it – Chantelle and Brianna came for a visit and gave it to Reid;
  • a few other books that Ken read but he isn’t as obsessed and so didn’t record.
